Travel The World While Staying Home

the-world-yachtClose your eyes and imagine waking up every morning to a different view without ever leaving home. You can have this luxury if you fancy living on the World, the only private residential  yacht on the planet. The World has 165 luxury apartments with full kitchens on board from studios to six bedrooms. Residents are allowed to fully own their apartment and decorate it to their own tastes. And if you think you are already blown away by what it has to offer, wait until you read the list of amenities: a cigar club, a library, conference rooms, a gourmet market, a spa, themed restaurants, bars and more. But, if you don’t want to eat out of your apartment and don’t feel like cooking, you can book a top chef that will prepare a meal in the comfort of your own home. Also, if you are a wine lover, the World also has everything for you with over 12,000 bottles of wine from 18 different countries.

Screen Shot 2014-11-13 at 6.02.47 PMThe most interesting thing about the World is that each year, residents get to pick their itinerary with two to three major expeditions. For 2015 for instance, the trip begins in Singapore via Southeast Asia. For the late winter, residents will have a taste of warm weather in Maldives and Seychelles followed by an adventurous trip in West Africa. Finally, the luxurious yacht full of residents will stop in Morocco, the Mediterranean, the UK and Iceland to end up in Canada, US, Panama Canal, South America and more. Check here to see the full itinerary. While residents range from 30 to 80 years old, the minimum to be considered for residency is a net worth of at least $10 million. So if you like the idea of spending your years traversing the globe instead of settling down in your vacation home, The World may be the address for you.

Knowing When To Fly

Hitlist

While there are a number of things you can do to find the cheapest airfare, timing is everything when it comes to getting the best deals.

Hitlist is a mobile app that knows when it’s least expensive for you to book a flight to your pre-picked destinations, saving you the trouble of regularly checking travel websites. So, if you have a bucket travel list, but also a budget, Hitlist will keep tabs on travel search engines, notifying you when it’s the best time to fly to any of your selected locations. For example, you can create an alert that notifies you if/when flights to Buenos Aires are listed at $650 or less.

Among other customizable features, you can pick the best airport for your travel needs, make your Hitlist public or private, and specify if you’d like to travel only on weekends (or whenever). And there’s also a cool world map to show you all the places you plan to go to or have visited already.

Did You Find My Message?

phone2

Over the past few years there have been countless messaging apps that enable users to reach out to friends over new mediums in fun and useful ways. Facebook Messenger and Snapchat are the most successful, but they aren’t even relatively fun compared to this new app.

Traces is an app where you send messages that can only be retrieved by your friends when they get to a specific location. So, when you are sending a message you pick a place where the receiver has to go within a time limit that you set in order to open it. It’s like a scavenger hunt, but with messages. Traces lets you share messages, videos, and even songs. The only downside is that the app is currently only available in the UK where it is in beta – but they are planning on bringing it to the US soon, so for now we just have to hang in there.

Upgrade Your Contacts

Humin

It’s no secret that most of Apple’s native apps are lacking in features and there are third party apps that function much better. The one app that I previously saw no need to improve was my Contacts app. It simply does a great job of saving my contact’s phone numbers and email addresses in a simple format. Well, after downloading Humin I now can see how much I’ve been missing out on.

Humin does much more than keep track of how to contact the people you know, it reminds you how you know people, helps you remember them, and can even help you contact them. When adding a new contact into the app, by just entering a phone number or email address, it will automatically add a photo, where and when you added the contact, and where they work. While these features may appear intrusive, Humin guarantees that they are only taking the minimum amount of data onto their servers, so majority of it they will never have access to. Swiping over a contacts picture allows you to call them right from the app, or it can take you to your text message conversation with them, allowing you to use this app to fully replace the green phone app.

This app redefines what a contacts app can do by bringing your contacts into the 21st century, far away from the days of keeping a rolodex on your desk.

Drive Into the Future

navdy-1

It’s important for us to be able to interact with our phones while driving in a safe and non-disruptive manner. Apple’s CarPlay is their attempt to fully integrate the iPhone into cars to make a seamless transition. But, what about an option for those of us who aren’t in the market for a new car right now?

Navdy is here with their device, “Google Glass for your car, but without the glasses”. Navdy is mounted on your windshield and connects to your phone to provide notifications in a safe manner. The device also comes with it’s own software, providing navigation and voice and motion control capabilities. This device might not let your car drive itself, but it sure does make staying connected while driving both easier and safer. Navdy is available for preorder now at $299.

What Sparks our Fire: Innovation everywhere.
