Super Jenga

Next, international disputes will be settled with spirited games of Risk.

Jenga is all about balance, delicacy, and finesse. These are words you normally wouldn’t associate with heavy earthmovers like the ones that Cat builds. However, this video demonstrates the fine-tuned capabilities these machines have, all under the tagline “Built For It”. This is a very clever idea for video advertisement. Everyone knows what Jenga is, and the moment you see that they’re going big with 600-lb. blocks you almost need to watch it, even if you aren’t in the market for an Excavator.

In essence, this isn’t only a decent advertisement but rather a very strong move to rebrand the concept of heavy construction equipment in the public mind. Not only can they push a lot of dirt around, they can finagle heavy blocks to balance on each other.

All Eyes On Me

The action cam is the oldest wearable tech that isn’t clothing. The incredible point of view videos shot from the perspective of skiers, surfers, bikers, and skydivers all come from these durable high-def little cams. Looking to add even more to the experience, Sony is upping the ante by multiplying the cameras.

The Sony HDR-AS100V is the tech giant’s next offering from CES. Up to five separate cameras can be networked together through an optional  RM-LVR1 wrist controller, giving the user a dynamic experience with cameras mounted either on different points of the body (ie. head, arms, torso, etc.) or on multiple people. Splash-proof, high definition, slow motion, and the ability to capture multiple angles at once will create an incredibly vivid and immersive experience. When combined with the PlayMemories software, the multiple viewpoints can be merged, creating a seamless video.

The whole package will be available in March, to the tune of about $1,600.

What Sparks Our Fire: We love what we’ve seen from CES, and wearable tech definitely seems to be the thing of the future, even for extreme sports.

Used Car Salesman

If you’ve ever tried to unload a crappy used car before, you know how hard it is to attract buyers, especially those who are willing to pay your asking price. That is, unless you are a filmmaker whose talent lies in positioning the 1996 Nissan Maxima alongside other such ancient works as the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum. Generously including such accouterments as wheels, tires, and an automatic transmission, the venerable 16-year-old vehicle was purchased by Nissan itself after they saw the advertisement. After a day, they made a deal for the car, as well as a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project. This is a great case for becoming a filmmaker so you can sell all your old stuff.

What Sparks Our Fire:  How brand positioning can make anything look good.

Would creative advertising like this influence you to buy secondhand products such as this Nissan?

How to Comodify Loneliness

Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Pinterest… social networks are as ubiquitous as they are different. Yet they all state that their purpose is to connect people across common interests or purposes, and to increase our ability to share our lives with others. Whether they are successful is still a matter of debate, as loneliness is one of the top complaints of modern human beings.

This video, from Shimi Cohen, discusses how our social networks make us less connected to the people around us because we collate and creatively edit the things that we show to people on our profiles. Maybe we can solve the problems of our own loneliness, but it won’t ever be due to more followers or likes.

What Sparks Our Fire: While we love social media, it’s important to contemplate the value of both virtual and physical relationships.

Does this video hit home for you and your social media use in the modern world?
